Background & Education

Dr. Margaret Calloway earned her PhD in Social Work from the University of Denver's Graduate School of Social Work, where her doctoral research focused on barriers to treatment engagement among rural populations with substance use disorders. She completed her clinical training through supervised practice placements at community mental health centers and residential treatment facilities in Montana and Wyoming.

She holds a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) credential and has maintained active licensure throughout her 18-year clinical career. Her undergraduate education was completed at the University of Montana, where she earned a Bachelor of Social Work.

Clinical Experience

Prior to joining Holy Rosary Healthcare's editorial team, Dr. Calloway spent over a decade working in direct clinical practice with individuals and families affected by substance use disorders. She served as Director of Outpatient Services at a regional behavioral health center in Montana, where she oversaw a clinical team providing individual therapy, group counseling, family systems interventions, and case management services for adults and adolescents in rural communities.

Her clinical approach integrates Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and contingency management principles. She has extensive experience working with clients at all levels of the ASAM continuum of care, from ambulatory outpatient to medically managed residential treatment. She has also worked closely with MAT (medication-assisted treatment) programs, coordinating care between prescribing physicians and counseling staff.

Throughout her career, Dr. Calloway has been particularly focused on the unique challenges facing rural patients seeking behavioral health treatment — including limited geographic access to specialized care, insurance coverage gaps, and the role of family systems in recovery outcomes.

Editorial Role at Holy Rosary Healthcare

As Editorial Director for Addiction & Recovery, Dr. Calloway provides clinical oversight for Holy Rosary Healthcare's addiction treatment content, including the Addiction Recovery and Substance Use Disorders verticals. She reviews all addiction-related content for clinical accuracy, appropriate use of evidence-based terminology, and alignment with current ASAM and SAMHSA guidelines.

Her focus areas include:

  • Types and levels of addiction treatment (outpatient, IOP, PHP, residential, medically managed)
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) — buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone
  • Insurance coverage for addiction treatment under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act
  • Relapse prevention frameworks and continuing care planning
  • Family systems approaches to supporting recovery
  • Special populations in addiction treatment (rural, co-occurring disorders, chronic pain)
